  97. ZIP SHELL FOR WINDOWS AND DOS

  101. PKZip and PKUnzip from PKWare are now the industry standard for
  102. lossless compression of files. They have a host of features, and even
  103. support the addition of descriptions to compressed files. However,
  104. they are also command driven, which makes them difficult to use for
  105. non experts. In addition, there is no way to add or extract 4Dos file
  106. descriptions.
  107.  
  108. There are other shells for PKZip & PKUnzip on the market. Some of them
  109. are undoubtedly quite good. But what I wanted was a program that would
  110. let you tag files to add to a ZIP file, and then add them along with
  111. their 4Dos file descriptions. In the same way I wanted to be able to
  112. tag the files in ZIP file, and extract them along with their 4DOS file
  113. descriptions. I also wanted to be able to see the descriptions along
  114. with the files. None of the available shells I looked at would do
  115. this.

  117. In 1989 I wrote the first version of ZIP.EXE to do this in a DOS
  118. environment. When I moved to Windows 3.0, I became fed up with having
  119. to open a DOS window to go and zip or unzip files. Finally I got
  120. around to writing a Windows equivalent that could be launched from
  121. program manager - ZIPW.EXE.
  122.  
  123. Both these programs serve the same function that of adding files to
  124. and extracting files from a ZIP file, while automating the add/extract
  125. of the associated 4DOS descriptions. Of the two, ZIPW is more
  126. sophisticated, using as it does the Multiple Document Interface to
  127. permit you to work on more than one ZIP file at a time. One of these
  128. days I will get around to rewriting the Dos version to provide similar
  129. features.

  131. Until then, ZIPW is V2.0, while ZIP is only V1.2. Both support the new
  132. V2.04g of PKZip and PKUnzip which is the latest version at time of
  133. writing.

  221. Instructions are given here for installing both the Windows version
  222. and the DOS version.

  228.   Place the disk in your drive, and from program manager type
  229.        RUN a:SETUP.EXE
  230.   or   RUN b:SETUP.EXE
  231.  
  232.   Answer the question about the destination drive. The software
  233.   should be installed automatically, and a Program manager group
  234.   should be created. You can later move the icons to another
  235.   group if you desire.
  236.  
  237.   If you do not have a copy of PKZIP & PKUNZIP, you should then
  238.   follow the DOS installation instructions to install PKZip &
  239.   PKUnzip on your disk.
  240.  
  241.   BBS Files
  242.   ─────────
  243.   If you have the BBS version of ZIP Fugue, then all you received was
  244.   the file ZIPW20.ZIP or ZIPW20.EXE, and all the files have been
  245.   archived into this file. In this case you need to extract all the
  246.   files to either your hard disk or your floppy disk before you can
  247.   run SETUP:

  318. manual will be free of physical defects which interfere with normal
  319. use. For a period of 90 days from the date of your purchase of ZIP
  320. Fugue, Fugue Software will, at its sole option and subject to the
